Almost everyone knowes Shepard Fairey (born 1970), expecially because of 4 letters famous all around the world: OBEY. His first sticker, Andre the Giant has a posse, born in 1989 as a joke between him and his friend of Rhode Island School of Design and since then, the wrestler’s big face, whether you like it or not, remains everywhere, both in the common visual memory and in the subliminal advertising strategies. However, in this case there was no product and under the Giant’s big face appeared the word Obey, borrowed by They Live, a 1988 John Carpenter’s movie.
Is the beginning of the “Obey Giant” campaign, with an increasing iconographic traffic that makes people become curious and start thinking about “public space” meaning, propag anda

and control. In 2008 the illustrator-artist-graphic-designer from Charleston, South Carolina, created the Barack Obama blu-with-red poster, with the word HOPE and PROGRESS, taken form the neo-President election campaign (now in the middle of a copyright lawsuit with Associated Press).
After ten years of urban activism, Shepard Fairey goes into an important US museum with a monographic didactic exhibition, to celebrate an icon.

The Don Gallery (Milan) presents a music dedicated Shephard’s artworks retrospective. Thirty original serigraphy music icon portraits: from Joe Strummer to Tupac…from the punk rock underground to

the hip-hop.

Taken by Matteo Donini (alias The Don) private collection, the exhibition will take place in Teatro Franco Partenti, the elita festival fifth edition headquarter, during the Salone del Mobile.

The Don Gallery is dedicated to the Street Art, Pop, Surrealism and Lowbrow. Graffitism evolution and 70’s movement new aspects. Matteo Donini, Gallery owner and founder, is a famous curator and art collector. Some of his collection ha s been exposed at PAC (Milan), ‘Botanique’ Museum (Bruxelles) and during 2009 edition of Con-Temporary.

Quasi tutti conoscono Shepard Fairey (classe 1970), in particolare per le 4 lettere che hanno fatto il giro del mondo: OBEY. Il suo primo sticker, Andre the Giant has a posse, é nato nel 1989 come scherzo tra l’artista e un suo compagno alla Rhode Island School of Design  e da lì il faccione del noto lottatore, volenti o meno, si è attaccato ovunque, persino nella memoria visiva, come nelle migliori tecniche di pubblicità subliminale. In questo caso però il prodotto non c’era e sotto il volto del Gigante è comparsa la scritta Obey, presa in prestito da They Live, film diretto da John Carpenter nel 1988.
Inizia così la vera e propria campagna “Obey Giant”, aumentando il traffico iconografico delle città, facendo sorgere curiosità e inducendo a riflettere sul significato di “spazio pubblico”, propaganda e controllo. Dulcis in fundo, nel 2008 l’artista-grafico-illustratore originario di Charleston, South Carolina, crea il poster blu-bianco-rosso di Barack Obama, con la scritta HOPE e PROGRESS immagine simbolo della campagna presidenziale del neo Presidente americano (e di recente al centro di una causa con l’Associated Press per violazione di copyright). Dopo vent’anni di attivismo urbano, Shepard Fairey entra in un importante museo americano con una mostra monografica, didascalica, per celebrare un icona.

La Don Gallery di Milano presenta una retrospettiva dei lavori che Shepard ha dedicato alla musica, serigrafie originali che ritraggono star e icone della musica: da Joe Strummer a Tupac….dal Punk rock underground al Hip Hop.

Provenienti dalla collezione privata di Matteo Donini alias The Don, saranno esposte durante il Salone del Mobile presso il Teatro Franco Parenti in occasione della V^ edizione di Elita Festival 2010 che sviluppa il tema Next Attitude.

La don gallery è una galleria ‘dedicata’ ai fenomeni della Street Art,  Pop Surrealism e Lowbrow. Termini che si riferiscono all’evoluzione del graffitismo, ai nuovi aspetti del fenomeno nato nelle strade di NY negli anni settanta. Matteo Donini ,proprietario e fondatore, è  un noto collezionista e curatore. Parte della  sua collezione è  stata esposta al PAC di Milano, Al Museo ‘Botanique’ di Bruxerlles e durante l’edizione 2009 di Con- Temporary.
